Fly control in Dubai

Flies breed in whatever is decomposing nearby, so killing the adults in a room achieves very little. We find the source — a drain, a bin store, a spillage under a unit — and deal with that alongside the adults.

Fly control in Dubai starts with finding the breeding source. Killing the adults achieves nothing on its own. A technician identifies the species, which points to the material they are breeding in — drain films, waste, spillage under equipment or organic debris — then treats that source, installs fly units where appropriate and reviews waste handling.

Fly control for Dubai homes and food premises

Flies are a symptom, never a cause. Every species breeds in a specific material — drain slime, decaying food waste, over-watered plant compost, organic build-up under kitchen equipment — and the adults in the room are the visible end of a cycle happening somewhere close by, usually within a few metres.

Dubai's temperatures compress that cycle dramatically. A common house fly can go from egg to adult in about a week in summer conditions, and a drain fly considerably faster. This is why a kitchen can go from clear to a serious problem over a long weekend, and why aerosols and fly spray never resolve it.

Star Al Madina treats flies across Dubai restaurants, hotel kitchens, supermarkets, labour accommodation, waste areas and homes. The inspection identifies the species first, because the species tells us what they are breeding in and therefore where to look.

Signs you have a fly problem

A few flies in summer is normal. What indicates breeding on the premises is where they congregate and how quickly they return after the room is cleared.

  • Flies returning within hours

Clearing a room and finding it busy again the same day means they are breeding inside the building, not coming in through a door.

  • Small flies near drains

Tiny moth-like flies resting on walls near sinks, floor gullies and shower drains indicate a biofilm build-up inside the pipework.

  • Clusters at windows

Adults accumulating at glass and light fittings, particularly on the side of the building nearest the waste area.

  • Maggots or pupal cases

Larvae in waste, under equipment or in floor junctions, or small brown capsule-shaped cases in the same places. This is conclusive evidence of breeding.

  • Activity around bins

Concentrated numbers at the bin store, refuse chute or external waste area, especially where bags are stored on the ground.

  • Flies in stored produce

Small flies hovering over fruit, vegetables or opened containers, which usually indicates fruit flies breeding in residue somewhere close by, not the produce itself.

Are flies dangerous?

Yes, in a specific way. Flies feed on waste and then walk on food surfaces, transferring pathogens mechanically. For a food business they are also one of the most serious inspection findings.

  • Mechanical disease transfer

Flies move directly between waste, drains and food surfaces, carrying bacteria on their legs and body and depositing them wherever they land.

  • Contamination of food

Adults regurgitate and defecate while feeding, so surface contact alone contaminates prepared food and exposed ingredients.

  • Risk to a business

For food premises, fly activity during a Dubai Municipality inspection can lead to fines, a closure notice and a published violation.

  • Rapid escalation

With a week-long life cycle in summer, an unnoticed breeding source becomes a serious infestation within two cycles.

Which fly you have changes the treatment

CHECK WITH TECHNICIANS

The species is the diagnostic. Each one breeds in a specific material, so identifying the fly tells us exactly where to search before we treat anything.

  • House fly

    Musca domestica · 6–8mm

The common large fly. Breeds in decaying organic waste — bins, refuse areas, food debris and spillage. Treatment concentrates on the waste stream and the bin store, well away from the room where they are seen.

  • Drain fly

    Clogmia albipunctata · 2–5mm

Small, dark and furry, resting flat on walls near drains with wings held over the body. Breeds in the gelatinous biofilm inside drains and gullies. Treating the room is useless; the pipework is the target.

  • Fruit fly

    Drosophila spp. · 3–4mm

Tiny, tan-coloured, often with red eyes, hovering around fruit, bar areas and recycling. Breeds in fermenting residue — drip trays, bottle returns, mop buckets and the film under equipment, not usually in the fruit itself.

How we treat flies

Identify the species, trace it to the breeding material, treat that source, then manage the adults with units and residual where appropriate.

Why not just spray or fog?

Spraying kills the adults present and leaves the larvae in the drain or the bin store to emerge the same week. It also puts insecticide into a food area for no lasting benefit.

  1. 1Species identificationThe fly tells us the material. A drain fly means biofilm in the pipework; a house fly means the waste stream; a fruit fly means fermenting residue. This directs the whole search.
  2. 2Locate the breeding sourceWe check drains and gullies, under and behind equipment, floor junctions, bin stores, refuse chutes, drip trays and any organic build-up the cleaning schedule does not reach.
  3. 3Treat the sourceBiological drain treatment to break down the biofilm, larvicide in waste areas where appropriate, and a clear list of what needs physically cleaning out.
  4. 4Adult managementInsect light units positioned away from food preparation and out of sight of open doors, plus targeted residual on the surfaces they rest on.
  5. 5Follow-up and reviewWe return to check whether the source has stopped producing, service the units, and review the waste and cleaning routines that allowed it to build.

Drain treatment, light units or residual?

Three different jobs. Which combination applies depends entirely on where the flies are breeding.

Comparison of fly control methods
MethodBest forVacate?How long it lasts
Drain and source treatmentDrain flies, fruit flies and any on-site breedingNoPermanent while cleaning is maintained
Insect light unitsOngoing adult control in kitchens, food premises and waste areasNoContinuous, tubes replaced annually
Residual on resting sitesExternal walls, waste areas and non-food zonesA short drying periodSeveral weeks on treated surfaces

Light units manage adults; they do not reduce breeding. If the units fill up week after week, the source has not been found, and that is where we go back to.

What affects the cost

Pricing follows the inspection, because the premises and the source determine the work. The inspection and the quote are both free.

One thing worth knowing

If the breeding source is a shared refuse chute or a communal bin store, treating one unit will not hold. That is a building management conversation, and we will say so instead of selling you repeat visits.

  1. 01Where they are breedingA single blocked floor gully is a short job. Organic build-up under a run of kitchen equipment, or a communal bin store, is not.
  2. 02Size and type of premisesA home kitchen differs from a hotel production kitchen with multiple drains, dishwash areas, bar drip trays and a refuse room.
  3. 03Number of light unitsCoverage is calculated by area and layout. Units must be sited away from food preparation and out of line of sight from open doors.
  4. 04AccessDrains under equipment, sealed floor junctions, ceiling voids and inaccessible refuse areas all add time on site.
  5. 05Home or food premisesFood businesses need scheduled visits, documented service records for Municipality inspection, and work arranged around trading hours.

Before the visit

What you need to do

Access to the places flies actually breed matters more than tidying the areas where you see them.

  • Give us access to drains, floor gullies, the bin store and the space behind and under kitchen equipment.
  • Do not bleach the drains immediately before the visit. It clears the surface and hides the biofilm we need to find.
  • Tell us when the problem is worst and where you see the most, and whether it followed a change in waste routine.

After the visit

What to expect

  • Adult numbers fall quickly, but expect a few more to emerge over the following week from larvae already developing.
  • Drain treatment works by breaking down biofilm over several days; nothing in the pipe dies instantly.
  • Keep to the cleaning actions in the report. They are usually the difference between resolved and recurring.
  • Light units will catch heavily at first. If they are still filling after a fortnight, tell us — the source is still active.

How long until the flies are gone?

Adults go quickly. The honest timeline is set by the larvae already developing when we treat.

  1. Treatment

Species identified, source located and treated, units installed where needed, and the cleaning actions written into the report.

  2. Adults drop sharply

Visible numbers fall as adults are removed and resting surfaces are treated. The room looks resolved quickly.

  3. Stragglers emerge

Larvae that had already developed complete their cycle. A few new adults in this window is expected, not a failure.

  4. Source stops producing

With the breeding material treated and cleaned out, emergence ends and unit catch drops noticeably.

  5. Review and confirm

We check unit catch, re-examine the source and review the waste and cleaning routines that allowed the build-up.

How to keep flies from coming back

Fly prevention is waste and drainage management. Take away the material they breed in and the problem goes with it.

  • Clean drains properly

Drain flies breed in the biofilm lining the pipe. Surface bleaching does not reach it; mechanical cleaning and enzyme treatment do.

  • Keep bins lidded and lifted

Bags off the ground, lids closed, and the bin store washed down regularly. An open bin store sustains a population indefinitely.

  • Clean under equipment

Spillage under fryers, fridges and prep benches is the most common hidden source in a commercial kitchen and the least often reached.

  • Empty drip trays daily

Bar drip trays, bottle returns and mop buckets ferment quickly in Dubai temperatures and are classic fruit fly sites.

  • Fit screens and door curtains

Screened openings, self-closing doors and air curtains at service entrances reduce the adults coming in from outside.

  • Tighten waste timing

Take waste out before close instead of leaving it overnight, and make sure collection frequency matches what the premises actually produces.

Where the problem comes from depends on where you live

Flies breed close to where they are seen, but in shared buildings the source is often not in the unit reporting it.

  • Apartments and towers

Usually drain flies from floor gullies and shower drains, or flies from a communal refuse chute and bin room. Chute and bin room treatment goes through building management and resolves far more than single-flat visits.

  • Villas and compounds

External bin stores, garden waste, compost, over-watered planters and pet waste are the usual sources. Treatment covers the waste area and the perimeter.

  • Restaurants and food premises

Drains, dishwash areas, spillage under equipment and the refuse room are the pressure points, and Municipality inspections treat fly activity seriously. These sites run on scheduled visits with documented unit records.

Flies questions

Why do flies come back after I spray?

Aerosols kill the adults in the room and do nothing to the larvae developing in a drain, bin or spillage nearby. With a week-long summer life cycle, the next generation emerges within days.

Where are they breeding if the kitchen is clean?

Almost always somewhere cleaning does not reach: the biofilm inside a drain, the spillage under a fridge or fryer, a bar drip tray, a mop bucket, or the communal bin store — seldom your own kitchen.

What are the tiny flies near my drains?

Drain flies. They are small, dark and furry, and rest flat on the wall with their wings over the body. They breed in the gelatinous film inside pipework, so the drain is the target, not the room.

Do I need to leave the property?

No. Drain treatment, source treatment and light units require no re-entry period. If residual treatment is applied in a non-food area, only a short drying time applies.

Are the products safe around food?

Products are chosen for the setting. In food areas we rely on source treatment and light units. Everything used is registered with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

How long does the treatment take?

A home visit usually takes under an hour. Commercial kitchens take longer because every drain, piece of equipment and the refuse area is inspected before anything is treated.

How should I prepare for the visit?

Give us access to drains, the bin store and the space behind and under equipment, and do not bleach the drains just beforehand. It hides the biofilm we need to find.

Can I clean afterwards?

Yes, and you should. Follow the cleaning actions in the report, but avoid flushing treated drains heavily for the period the technician specifies so the treatment can work on the biofilm.

Do the light units solve the problem?

They manage adults; they do not reduce breeding. If units keep filling week after week, the source has not been found, and that is what we revisit before adding more units.

Do you treat restaurants and food premises?

Yes. Food businesses run on a scheduled programme with documented service and unit records, which Dubai Municipality inspections require, and visits are arranged around trading hours.

Key points

  • Flies are a symptom — the breeding material is the actual problem.
  • The species identifies the source: drain flies mean pipework, fruit flies mean fermenting residue.
  • Light units manage adults but do not reduce breeding.
  • Summer life cycles of about a week mean problems escalate very fast.
  • In towers the source is often the communal chute or bin room, not your kitchen.
  • Inspection and the written quote are free.
